Apollo 18 Review (2011)

Early September, my family and I saw ‘Apollo 18’. A film that is suppose to make you think that it is actually decades-old found footage from NASA’s abandoned Apollo 18 mission, where two American astronauts were sent on a secret expedition, reveals the reason the U.S. has never returned to the moon. When I first heard about this film, I thought it was going to be like the Apollo 13 film starring Tom Hanks. Boy, was I wrong! I looked more into this film and saw it was a horror/sci-fi type film. Seeing that it was a horror automatically made me want to see it! Horror and sci-fi are two of my favorite genres.

This horror is about a undiscovered extraterrestrial creature that was originally found by a Russian space crew, but the Russians were all killed by this creature of the moon. The Americans found the abandoned ship, and explored it. They told the crew at NASA, but shockingly, they already knew about it. They used the two Americans (without telling them) basically as an experiment. Just a sick move by the team on earth, really. One thing I really a liked about the film is the suspense. Like, one scene they are exploring a deep, deep, deep and dark crater where supposedly the creature hides; they use a flashlight that flashes every second. And for the first few flashes all you see is moon rock, another flash, you see a rotting human leg, and then the grand finale, another flash you see the rotting head of an astronaut! The entire theater was screaming! I also love how they use great SFX and FX, they make it seem so realistic!

It also reminds me of ‘Paranormal Activity’ and ‘Cloverfield’. The way the film is being recorded. You see many different angles of what’s going on the film. Not once did you see a traditional movie shot. It was always a bit scratchy or even grainy. That is also one thing that made realistic! But most of all, I think it’s the acting. Amazing acting was shown in this film. I feel that this is one of the greatest horror/sci-fi films made!

Check out the most startling and horrifying clip from the movie!
